Chris and Jeff’s Music Trade Off 10/23/2020

Car Seat Headrest - Hollywood

Jeff started the night with this gem.

End of Year Self Defense Family - Panda Studios Session

Chris thinks this is a solid song, and thought Patrick from the band was really cool. Reminds him of a good friend Chuck who he hadn't see in a while.

The Distillers - The Hunger Live at Reading Festival

Punk in hi Def! Jeff played this because we had seen her live almost exactly one year earlier, before the pandemic. "Hold on to the memories, that's all you got"

Lumineers - Ho Hey

Chris is connecting to this toay, had a mellow morning, listening to music all day. "This music just feeds my soul."

Liars - The Other Side of Mt Heart Attack

Jeff can't get enough of the layers in this song, each verse layering on a little more,

Manchester Orchestra - I've Got Friends

Chris was searching for a specific song, then remembered this solo, and the passion of this, and in his opinion, the art of the song is here.

Crash Test Dummies - Superman

The acoustic version of this song always reminds me of my college roommate Jason. He has a crazy cool deep voice, is an amazing singer, and this song just shows a great, different view of the world.

Five for Fighting - Superman

For Chris, Smallville holds a special place in his heart, as it was such a good touchstone for his son Judah and himself. When it comes to superman, and this song, you are talking about virtues, and how that informs your life and decisions. This also drove Chris to write one of his own songs, "Hero for a Day"

First Break - Hall and Oates - How Does it Feel to be Back

First break song of the night, chosen by Chris.

Gary Jules - Mad World

Jeff and Teri love the movie Donnie Darko. This song, which is a cover of the Tears for Fears original, is haunting, and beautiful.

Ben Harper - Not Fire, Not Ice

For Chris, this is a song for his son. The lyrics are actually painted on Judah's wall, and is a great representation of how Chris feels about his son. This one made Jeff a little misty, or it was really dusty in the basement.

Leo Kottke - Busted Bicycle

The first time Jeff actually took his Dad to a concert, instead of vice versa, was seeing Leo Kottke at the Stafford Opera House in Ft. Worth. This song has always fascinated him, and until seeing it live, Jeff never thought it was possible that it was just Leo and a single guitar. This take him back to his childhood, and the love of music that came from his parents.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Bicycle Song

Chris wanted to take it up a little! He really wanted a new album this year. With Frusciante back with RHCP, he brings incredible harmonies, and Chris loved it when John sang more. This is an amazing B-side.

Second Break - Hall and Oates - Rich Girl

You forget just how many amazing songs this duo had.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Million Miles of Water

Chris with the double play, loving this song, and it's part of Venus.

Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide

Jeff starts the double play with 2 songs from the Pumpkins. The harmonies from Million Miles of Water immediately brought this song to mind. Great cover of the amazing Fleetwood Mack song.

Smashing Pumpkins - Spaceboy

This song is a huge touchstone for Jeff, and one of the craziest, most unforgettable weekends ever. Somewhere between unplanned road trips, 2 visits to jail to pick the same friend, broken glasses and a harrowing ride home, Billy Corrigan played this song live all by himself acoustic. Jeff couldn't have asked for a better time.

Jerry Garcia Band - Tangled up in Blue

This is holy. This is church. Chris loves Bob Dylan, and this cover from Jerry is amazing.

Glenn Frey - Smuggler's Blues

Jeff is a huge fan of songs that tell a story, and this song does it well. It's from Miami Vice, and growing up, Jeff doesn't remember another show before that used music to set the mood quite like Miami Vice did. In the Air Tonight anyone?

The Police - Every Little Thing She Does is Magic

Chris says this has one of the best endings of any songs ever. Easily in the Top 5 song endings of all time. This is a piece of art.

Third Break - Kings of Leon - Camaro

Jeff picks First of 2 break songs from Kings.

Third Break Continued - Kings of Leon - Black Thumbnail

Such a great song, and a phenomenal album

Sting - Love is the Seventh Wave

Jeff played this because the ending is so close to Every Little Thing She Does is Magic

The Grateful Dead - Estimated Prophet

Chris picked this one, lives the combination of the ocean and the California vibe.

REM - You Are Everything

Jeff doesn't think there is a bad song on this album, but this song in particular really was speaking to him tonight.

Counting Crows - Catapult

Chris designates this album, Recovering the Satellites, as a desert island album from start to finish, and this is his #1 song from the album.

Pearl Jam - Release

this is another touchstone for Jeff, and a song he can play at any time, and immediately get a smile, and a sing along from his wife. Ten is a desert island album for Jeff.

Stone Temple Pilots - Long Way Home

Chris believes in Trees of Music, like STP, Pearl Jam, nirvana and Soundgarden. This is what Chris hears, his kick ass song, his sad song.

Art of Anarchy - Small Batch Whisky

Chris has said many times that Scott Weiland is one of the best singer/sogwriters in recent memory. Scott is STP, and Chris has never seen STP live, because without Scott, there is no real STP.

Alice in Chains - Would

Jeff feels that Lane Staley and Scott Weiland are so similar, and truly defined their respective bands. Chris exclaims "The Anvil has been dropped"

James Taylor - Country Road

Chris believes James is one of the best songwriters ever. They are Trees, that music knocks down. James Taylor is a huge touchstone for Chris.

Nine Inch Nails - Big Man With a Gun

Jeff decided to take it in a whole new diretion....

Bruce Springsteen - It's Hard to be a Saint in the city

Chris starts a 2fer block of Springsteen with this classic

Bruce Springsteen - Grown' Up

And another great Springsteen gem

Break five - John Denver - Rocky Mountain High

For Jeff, this song will neverget old. Had to be playing any time we crossed the border from New Mexico to Colorado growing up.

Break five continued - GZA featuring RZA - Liquid Swords

Can't ever go wrong with GZA or the RZA.

Dust Brothers - This is Your Life

This is a great mix of dialogue and clips from Fight Club with that kick ass Dust Brothers flair.

Jay Z - On to the Next One

I got a million ways to get it!

Gza - 4th Chamber Feat. Ghostface Killah, Killah Priest & Rza

Chris is a huge fan of the story Lone Wolf & Cub, a basis for so much of what we see in today's understanding and descriptions of what a hero is.

NWA - Boys in the Hood

For Jeff, this song immediately takes him back to high school.

In closing...

41 songs overall tonight, another busy evening!

As always, we hope you have the opportunity to have an East Bay Night with your friends every chance you get.
